The Fig Tree and You

Mark 11: 12-14, 20-21

“The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it. In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

Peace and good to all.

If I may share here my insights on the above Gospel of Mark.

The Gospel was all about the cursing of the barren fig tree by Jesus.

Jesus came from His ministry then and was hungry. He saw leaves from a fig tree and looked for fruits but He found nothing. It was not the season for figs yet. It was then that Jesus cursed the tree and the next day, his disciples saw that the same tree has withered.

What does this mean to all of us?

The fig tree in the Gospel symbolizes, us, the christian followers of Christ, His believers. When we accept Christ as our savior and follow Him, we are expected to bear fruits. Fruit-bearing christians we ought to be.

And, how can we be fruit-bearing followers of Christ? I believe it is when we read the Bible, when we practice Christ teachings, when we do things to glorify God, when we share the gospel to others and when we act with obedience to God. We cannot profess faith in God and yet we are dead spiritually. For if that is the case we are the so-called “unfruitful christians” who profess faith in God but do not have any personal relationship with Christ.

Being a follower of Christ does not stop in attending church fellowship or activities regularly or attending bible study regularly. It does not stop in reading a verse or verses in the Bible, even regularly. It means finding Christ message to you in your personal level as you read between the lines of God’s words in the Bible, so you would be able to bear fruits (the wisdom you get from the message of Christ) to be shared to others who are hungry for the word of God. We are barren followers of Christ, if we cannot spread His good news to the world. We are unfruitful followers of Christ if we profess to be christians with christian faith but of shallow or of no personal relationship with Christ himself.

I started few weeks ago, doing regular “Jesus and me time” every morning. I talk to Him and He speaks to me through the gospel I read in “His-breathed book”- the Bible. There was indeed a struggle understanding His message, but I always get it anyways, thank’s to His mercy. And, my fair share to Him in allowing me to know His message is to share it with you together with my insights or reflections. Most of the times, the reflections you read was typed with tears in my eyes, but they were tears of joy because in every words that I type I could feel His presence, and that of the Holy Spirit in my heart. You may want to try that too, my brothers and sisters, He’s just waiting for you.

Christ is full of mercy. He knows the depths and the abyss of our hearts.

May Christ spirit be with us always.
