“Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”Matthew 8:19-22
Peace and good to all.
If my share my thoughts on the above gospel.
The gospel speaks about two short conversations of Jesus with two men who want to follow Him. Notice that Jesus in talking to them presented a scenario for them to decide if they really want to follow Him. Actually, instead of encouragement, His words were more of a discouragement to them. But why? Because Jesus would want to emphasize that it takes a lot of sacrifice, discipline and obedience to follow Him. And, Jesus wants that if they decided to follow Him, it is with full heart and devotion and not because they are just overwhelmed about what they heard about Him.
A teacher of the law, wanting to follow Him, would be a great part of Jesus’ discipleship. But instead of encouraging this teacher of the law to be one of His followers, Jesus described to him a not-comfortable life he would be facing, if he decides to follow Jesus. He wants the teacher of the law to know what he is getting into when he finally decides to follow Jesus — a not comfortable life but rather a life full of sacrifices and commitments.
And, this is what Jesus is saying to all us too who want to follow Him or are following Him already. Living a life following the footsteps of Jesus does not mean a life in luxury and comfort, it is full of sacrifices. But when we follow Jesus, we have Jesus. When we have Jesus in our lives, we have peace that no person or no amount of comfort and luxury can give us.
Who takes precedence in our priorities in following Jesus? Is it our family, our career, our health, our status, our loved ones, etc? Sisters and brothers, our priority should be Jesus and Jesus only, not even our spouse, not even our children, not even our parents, not our health, not our career, but Jesus only. Jesus is life and He should be the most important in our life if we want to follow Him. This is exactly His point to the man when He said : Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” Love for our family while is important too, should not take the place of the best thing: following Jesus. Nothing and no one should get into our way when we decide to follow Jesus. Jesus must be our number one, our top priority. To some of us, Jesus has never even reached their radars. What about you, where is Jesus in the list of your priorities?
The above Gospel is short but instructive. Following Jesus is not a bed of roses. It is full of sacrifice, it entails commitment. Actually, many who have started following Him have stopped and did not even know about it. If you have not followed Him yet, it might be the time to start, ponder it. A life with Jesus gives you peace that no one and nothing in this earth can give you. When your heart is at peace because of Jesus, everything follows: happiness, joy, wisdom, contentment and love.
