“and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”Matthew 10:38-39
Peace and good to all.
If I may share my insights on the above gospel.
When we speak of cross to carry, the first thing we think about is problem, trial or burden. But I think that is not what is meant in the gospel when Jesus commanded us of taking up our own cross and follow him.
The gospel is indeed an easy read but very hard to digest. What is that cross that I have to take? Then it came to me that when Jesus carried His cross, crucifixion and death followed for the salvation of the world to happen and for resurrection, a new life, to take place. So, it means that when Jesus calls me and I decide to take my cross and follow Him, it means, death. Yes, death of my old sinful self, in order to have a new life with Jesus. A life where Jesus is the foundation and center of everything.
It means putting an end to our personal and earthly desires and completely surrendering our life to Jesus. It means being obedient to God, following God’ will instead of our selfish desires. Putting God first ahead of everything. This is hard indeed. We cannot do it on our own. We cannot carry our own cross for our sinful life to die on it in order to have a new life, without help. We need Jesus to help us. We need faith. We need the Holy Spirit to guide us.
