“No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’ “Luke 5:36-39
Peace and good to all.
If I may share my insights on the above gospel of our Lord.
In this parable of the old cloth and old wineskin, the old garment and the old wineskin, represent our old ways, our traditions, beliefs, our old understanding about the commandments of God.
The new garment and the new wine, however, represent the Gospel of the Lord, the Word of God. The Word of God directs us to Jesus and His teachings on how to be saved and have eternal life.
Like the new wine, it needs a new vessel, it cannot be poured into the old wineskin because it will burst. Like the new wine, the word of God needs a new vessel, a new container, a person born anew upon his acceptance of Jesus. These are the people who have turned their back from their the old mundane lifestyle, these are the people who have asked for forgiveness from their sins and who have accepted God with a renewed strength brought about by their acceptance of Jesus.
We may not understand it at the first instance, but upon our acceptance of Jesus as our saviour coupled with our repentance from our sins, we became a new creation of God. Our old selves have died and our new life is kept with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3), hence, we become a new wineskin, a new vessel, a new container, which can contain the new wine – the Word of God.
And, if we are the containers of the Word of God, what do you think is expected from us by God? To share the Word of God to others, so that others may know the good news of the Lord. Preach the good news of the Lord in whatever way you can, and know that you are be guided by the Holy Spirit in doing so, because the Holy Spirit dwells in your heart.
Remain in the fellowship of Christ because that is the main intention of God for us in the first place, unbelievers lack the fellowship with God, that is why it’s very hard for them to have a relationship with Jesus. And, whomsoever, who believe that they do not actually need a fellowship with God as long as they are good in their life and they are not hurting anyone, and always have good thoughts in their life, is fooling themselves. Whomsoever also is too busy to accept God as his saviour and whomsoever is too proud to profess faith in Jesus, is definitely not in fellowship with God. How pitiful.
Many of us have lost the opportunity to be saved and have eternal life because they stick with their old clothes, they stick with their lifestyle, they are not interested in God, or may be not just yet, but when? God be with you all.
